    Default Great Month

A nice slow January and now a dead motherboard on the office desktop computer. The hits just keep on coming.

Nick, I hear ya. I am limping along with my son's 2005 Celeron machine. I bought it from him so he could move up to something more crash-resistant. He put up with my castoff PC's all thru the 90's, so I owed him that much.
I have found that keeping the big chip cooling fins clean and leaving the side of the case hanging open helps to keep the heat down and the thing runs ok (for a piece of crap).
There are good deals to be had out there, but I'm told there is a shortage of hard drives, due to flooding in Asia last year. So you may want to hang on to your old HD, if it is newer.

The unit that just died is about 7 years old so it probably lived beyond it's normal life. I bought a new desktop today but found out the reason the prices are so low on them is because the manufacturers are not loading it them with basic software packages which leaves the buyer to purchase them after market. By the time you get what you need, it's not as great a deal as initially thought. I also bought and external hard drive for backup. I'm going to ask my computer guy if he can just transfer all my files from the dead unit head drive onto the new external hard drive and avoid loading the new desktop up with all the other crap.

    Nick,

Try a HD Transfer Case Sabrent USB 2.0 to IDE/SATA Cable for 2.5-Inch/ 3.5-Inch / 5.25-Inch Drive with Power Adapter at TigerDirect.com take your old HD out , usually hooks up via usb port ( I've done a few from my old laptops to pull data to the new after they died.) your DT may have a different size or style HD.

    Nick,

    Back in 2007...
I purchased (2) Toshiba Laptop Computers (same day / equal use).
second week of December, I had a hard drive failure.
2 days later.... the hard drive failed on the 2nd computer.

    (NO BACKUPS)

These guys recovered all of my data, mirrored the computer, and I was back online (without loss of data) with both computers in 2 days.

    Just another thought.
Install the old hard drive in your new tower as a slave drive. Less clutter and less cost .
