I found your page because I have an issue with a rusty, 18' lintel above my double wide garage. I do a lot of woodwork, cabinet making, painting and home maintainence, always looking for ways I can do things myself if possible. However, the lintel problem is way beyond my capabilities, and I am looking for a way to replace it, or at least shore it up until I can get it replaced.

Why does the lintel,or angle iron need to be replaced?

It needs to be replaced because half of the lintel is badly rusted and is sagging about 1 1/2 inches below the bottom layer of bricks. It is not an angle iron lintel, it is an I beam with a flat bar welded to the bottom of the beam.
