Continuing Education for Tennessee
The East TN Chapter of ASHI will be putting on a two day education seminar in February 2008 (the 15th and 16th) in Knoxville.

Douglas Hansen will be the instructor for a variety of topics. 16 hours total, and all will be approved for ASHI and State education requirements. Most of you should know Douglas since he is one of the authors of the Code Check series.

More details will follow, including announcement of a very special keynote speaker.

All inspectors are welcome, you don't have to be a member of ASHI to attend.

Re: Continuing Education for Tennessee
Jack,

Well Doug is definitely a star attraction. Will this be two full days and will it be all Doug? I'd like to pencil this into the calendar and will be waiting for further info. Last time I saw Doug he got into some mind-numbing stuff, really scattered my brain cells for a couple of days.

Re: Continuing Education for Tennessee
Yes two full days worth 16 hours credit. Doug will be doing a variety of topics/sessions. I don't have all the info yet - just giving a heads up.

The committee is trying to make this seminar the best bang for the education dollar. Come July, there will probably be a lot of TN inspectors that have not been very good about getting the required education credits for license renewal.

For those that can't make it to New Orleans, it's also a way to get their ASHI credits too. I'm doing both.

Here's a tentative line up:
Grounding & Bonding
Top 10 mistakes in New Construction
Building Structures and Exteriors
Grounding and Bonding
A/c & heat Pumps
Gas appliance venting

I may not be clear on these, and some may change.

Re: Continuing Education for Tennessee
We are going to be working on getting a hotel to give special room rates for our conference. The Hampton Inn is pretty close as well as La Quinta and Holiday Inn.

I would like comments from anyone that is considering coming to the conference and needing a hotel. Looking over the menu for the conference made me hungry. I know that we will be well fed as well as well informed/educated.

Breakfast, lunch and afternoon snacks will be provided, as well as water/coffee and tea all day long.

Jack,

You mentioned that a couple of hotels are "pretty close." It didn't occur to me that the conference may not be at a hotel. I hadn't planned on renting a car.

Re: Continuing Education for Tennessee
Is Knoxville still hard to fly into??

When I used to visit from Austin, TX (once or twice a month for a couple of years) it was easier and faster to fly into Nashville, rent a car and drive across to Knoxville.

Sounds interesting. Think I'll pencil it in for my February schedule. I'd like to hear what Doug has to say.

And it's only about a 2 1/2 hour drive.

Re: Continuing Education for Tennessee
We found a better deal at a conference center. It is a catering and conference center, and their food is really good.

Knoxville is not the greatest airport to fly into (or out of). The airport is not really that close to Knoxville (1/2 hour) so a rental car would probably be needed.

I haven't got the pricing details yet, but we are trying to make it a very low cost per hour.

More details to come

Re: Continuing Education for Tennessee
Hey Jack,
Can we get an update on the two day education seminar in February 2008 (the 15th and 16th) in Knoxville.

ASHI-South meets on the 12th of January and I would like to tell the inspectors there about it.

Thanks

Re: Continuing Education for Tennessee
Courses seem to be the same as outlined before. No changes that I am aware of.

Special guest speaker will be the brand new ASHI President for 2008, Brion Grant.

Trying to get the State of TN Commissioner of HI Licensing to attend, but there have been recent changes in that office, so it may be difficult to not only know who the person is, but to get them to attend. More on this later.

Working on getting a special rate for hotels close by, but there are a pile of them within 5 -6 miles.

More as I get the info.

A word of advice if I may; Do anything within reason to get your state commissioner of home inspectors to attend, even if for only half a day!
He will leave with a new awareness and resulting admiration for what our profession does for their continuing education. Douglas is a first class speaker and knows his stuff. He also happens to be a personal friend of mine and as long as I’ve known him he never fails to impress the hell out of me every time I listen to him speak!

Re: Continuing Education for Tennessee
Don Trotter left a while back. I think his wife died recently. Donna Hancock is listed as the interim director. We are going to try to get the Director to come.

Besides Douglas, Peter Drennan will be doing the education. Anyone that has taken the Code Check classes will know Peter.

With Don Trotter gone that will make the new person the 5th Director in two years! Isn't this an appointed postion by the Governor?

Peter teaches a good class. I plan on attending
