    Smile Painted exhaust vent

    Hi,

Painter went crazy in garage and painted everything, water heater exhaust vent, tpr valve and flexable gas line and shut off valve.
Any thoughts on painted exhaust vent, never ran into one painted before.
    Thanks
    Mike Richards

Needed to get some paint on rusty water intake line to hide it.

After the paint burns off it will not be to bad except for the PRV. will still be covered. Though that may not be a real problem though bad idea.

    Should be B-vent unpainted

The rusted line looks like a standard outdoors screw on hose, not soldered copper. Paint wont fix it. I agree that the painted TPR is more likely to fail. The B vent might give off bad vapours when heated, depends on the type of paint.
My concern is the rusted line shown in the pic. Is it an outdoor hose tapped in.
Whats the top of the tank look like?

    Any more pics???

Looks like flexible copper connector made for WHs sitting on a nipple and coupling off the dielectric nipple. Rust may indicate excessive humidity sweating on the cold inlet.

Foam insulation too close to single walled connector-6". Shouldn't use elbow right off draft hood.

Draft hood appears to be working by spilling flue gases--need combustion analysis.

You cannot 'cover' vent connector with anything. While the first intent on this code was to keep insulation wraps off, it means anything that will obstruct visual inspection of the condition of the connector and joints. Paint will mask corrosion so all the painted pipe should be replaced. Since it is in a garage, it must be B-vent for an unconditioned space.

    What does this vent into?

Keep the fire in the fireplace.

maybe just a terrible solder job that ruined the finish

see the vent in the wall in the background of the garage. wonder of it leads into the house.

Ugly color, no taste. From the look of things it's not long for this world.

Occasionally I see things like that painted white. When I see white paint I tend to look further. Could there possibly have been a fire? Its cheaper than changing the ducts etc. JMO
