Oil in gas line
Inspected a house yesterday. There appeared to be lubricating oil dripping from the gas line threads where the pipe entered the house. Never saw this before. Has anyone seen this before?

Hi Greg,

Fill in your profile, it helps folks to know your location and a little about you when they answer questions.

The natural gas supply is different in just about every region of the country. The gas in my area (Tennessee) is different than the gas in California or New York.

Re: Oil in gas line
Was it a new house or a new gas meter installation?

Re: Oil in gas line
It was an 82 year old house in good shape.. The meter was not new, nor was the piping. I called the gas company and they blew me off and said ask a plumber. Great service, huh?

Re: Oil in gas line
Welcome Greg,
it could be thread cutting oil. Let's hope it wasn't 3in1 lube oil instead of pipe dope. Any trace of dope? Got a pic? We're a very visually oriented bunch here. The other part of us nagging for pics is it gets more inspectors taking more pics. Some home inspectors take none while others take several hundred per house.

Bob
