Jon, I recommend you always shoot a pic of the listing label on the vent pipe. When you get back to the office, you can look it up and quote directly from that mfr. and save speculation and opinion. The listed instructions from that mfr. are first and foremost. However, you still need to cross-reference the codes to consider things such as the application of a firestop where there is no ceiling and how do you fireblock this.

The listing will provide your answers for your vent strapping question elsewhere.

Your DUH moment is coming back to haunt you, I see.

Yeah, well, DUH! THAT is a "decorative pipe collar", and as such IT GOES ON THE BOTTOM of the ceiling ... for decoration.

It is not, however, the fire stop.

Quoting the Simpson DuraVent installation instructions here "An optional Pipe Collar is available for decorative purposes." From the installation instructions, Item 5. Pipe Assembly.

That decorative pipe collar goes up under the ceiling to hide the Fire Stop Support or Fire Stop Spacer which is installed above it. The first ceiling above the appliance is supposed to get the Fire Stop Support, additional ceilings, such as in multi-story buildings, get the Fire Stop Spacer.

If you expect any respect, it would benefit you to show some. Jerry has corrected you on some stuff. Let me add to it. To put that decorative collar on either side is not in the code; any code. But then, you'd have to be pretty damn dumb to put it the underside of the sheet rock.

With respect to the fire stop, you are correct, it is not in IRC code, but it is implied in other sources. And in each case it is stated that the collar should be so that it protects from the side most likely to produce the fire or smoke (or words to that effect). My statement is easily verifiable. The guys on this forum are sharp enough to find the same information I did. So, I put it to you, Mr. "Two sentence put down artist", show me where it says you can or should place the fire stop on the side away from the source.

We have some spirited debates here, and with the exception of the licensing issues, all remain civil and informative. Funny how the only time that changes is when some jack leg who doesn't understand that a license is where you begin to learn, tosses out insults to people he doesn't know, always under cover of anonymity.
