    Default Chimney Cricket

Is there any type of roof installation or ice water shield which would preclude the need for a cricket. These chimneys were 33 and 43 inches in width. It is a presidential shingle. House was built in 06 and the roof pitch was around a 3/12.

If the chimney or other similar obstruction is greater than 30 inches wide ... the code REQUIRES ... a cricket.

The only person who can do differently is the Building Official, and he/she would need to give their acceptance in writing and be able to justify it with back up documentation (that they would have the person asking about it provide).

    Matthew,

"Requires" is a difficult word. Here in CA, we used to use the UBC and a cricket was not required. Now it is, but an existing installation would not have to have a cricket. When the shingles are replaced, a cricket would be required. In my experience, most roofing contractors will not install crickets when reroofing, because they don't feel like it.

How old is the current roof covering and did UT use the UBC?

There are online utilities. There may also be one already on your computer. Search for "photo resizing".

Unless it intersects the ridge line.

But we don't know without a picture.

It does not intersect a ridge line, its right in the middle of the roof. It's pretty simple, I was just really surprised to see missing crickets.

Just shows there is more than one way to skin a cat, and according to Gunnars new signature they can be tasty as well.

I sure hope there are no PETA members here.

Funny looking cricket Matthew. Some kind of interior electric cricket?

Might just be my cheap default viewer, I can't make out an insect with the resolution and carpet background; but have had an occasional invader over the decades. I recall many (many!) years ago one of the sons had a pet which required the purchase and feeding of live crickets, once or twice one got away (went missing) and chirped for days, most annoying!

Nice to see someone else still using old fashioned file system.

Try "VSO Resizer" to resize a whole file of pics in Vista or Win7. I use PaintShopPro out of habit.

Busted. Agent called me today and said the city told them cricketshave to be installed. Two grand! My question is how did it pass inspection in the first place and why doesn't the city inspector have to pay for it like we do.

Here in MN the city inspector is not going to get on the roof. The roofers supply pictures of the ice shield, underlayment and flashing. So it would be probable that the inspector wouldn't even walk around the house to see if there was a chimney, let alone a cricket. In your case it would be very possible for the inspection department to force the roofer to do the required repairs even after they passed it the first time.

Around here in 06 everything was so busy some inspectors (city/county) had as many as 30 inspections a day.

why doesn't the city inspector have to pay for it
That is what the builder is for .

In Miami-Dade County after Hurricane Andrew the inspectors were doing 80 inspections per day ... let me re-phrase that ... the inspector were given over 80 inspections per day to do ... I have no idea how many were actually done, but it was not possible to do 80 per day, so many were just "signed off" from the inspectors car while someplace else or back at the office.
