    Isn't that a skylight?

Its a skylight with copper flashing which has had a chemical effect on the wood shake roof cover (whitening). Not a problem.

It's a Velux skylight, they come with a flashing kit and I have never seen one with copper flashing. The flashing is aluminum as is the rest rest of the exterior cladding all with the same painted finish.

I would guess that the bleached out area on the shingles/shakes is a result of cleaning the skylight.

My guess is galvanized flashing at the bottom and the zinc in the galvanized killed the mildew on the roof.
