    Default Clay Tile Vent?

I think that's what this is. I did a search and didn't find a match. Do you know who makes this, or something similar? And, what is it used for. There were probably 8 - 10 on the roof today.

Try with a photo. Thought it was in the first time.

Thanks. It is what I thought it was. Don't think I've seen any on a clay roof before, but there aren't a whole lot of clay roofs here.

Those tile vent terminals are quite common, see them (or variations) frequently.

BTW, the tile in your photo looks like concrete, not clay.

Same here in CA . You should also check to see if the 'exposed galvanized metal' needs to be painted/protected by your local code, as it does for our CBC 1510.6 - "Missing, rusted or damaged flashing and counter flashing vent caps and metal edging shall be replaced with new materials. All metal allowed to be reinstalled shall be primed prior to re-roofing and painted prior to final installation".

    Well Stated Steve,

The first thing that I saw and thought was that this is an unfinished product and that it is poor workmanship to install unfinished metal in roof job, regardless of galvanized process finish.

On the knee wall behind the metal is finished in a dark trim color. I would bet that all the break through hats/caps are painted similarly. THis would mean that who ever did the work failed to finish the job in the same workman-like manner. Probably a different installer. It also means that this metal is unprotected except by electro galvanize. It wont last as long as the roof and other metal if unpainted. It will eventually rust visibly and deteriorate.

They have paint finishes that even texture to match the visual appeal of concrete tiles.
There probably is a code regarding it, there wasn't when I was a roofer.

Interesting take. The stuff in the back is a plastic end wall flashing that extends down over the top of the upper row of tiles. The did paint some of the mortar used at a few places, but the flashing was not painted. Not a great job of tile roofing, in my opinion.

I would never recommend painting something on a roof here. The UV is going to lay waste to that paint in no time. It would just be a waste of time. It is very rare that galvanized metal rusts here unless the galvanized area was damaged by cutting. What about your drip edges, roof jacks and other flashing. Do you guys paint that as well?

I used to roof in CA, we pantied all metal to match the roof or trim. Galvalume with paint doesnt need anything. Yes we painted flashings and drip edge to match roof or trim.

Funny that you say that you dont have to worry about rust there. I am in Florida now and production electro-galvanized will NOT last, not even as long as a roof (30 year roof lasts about 12-18 yrs UV/heat/moisture is brutal). Too wet and moist at all times. Let any debris rest on the metal from oaks or other acid plants and the metal dissolves pretty quickly. Most of what is used here is galvalume for metal. I wish hot dipped/heavy galv. caps etc were still available and cheap enough to use!

I have never roofed in Florida until now. I am getting ready to put a click lock metal roof on my house. Nail on underlayment with self adhesive underlayment over it. Current thought is that all wood will be counter flashed. I just replaced all soffits and trim and it all degrades quickly here if any water hits it.

Regional differences can be fun. Painted drip edge here usually results in peeling paint in 4-5 years. When it is factory applied galvanized, it can last a long time. It is usually Galvalume here on the metal trim, but the unpainted works just fine as long as it's galvanized. Must be the heat or moisture, because I am sure our UV is significantly higher than FL. TX should be similar, unless it is close to the coast. Paint is pretty much avoided on all of our exterior surfaces if possible. Metal roofs work pretty well, and the new PVC roofing seems to be a good choice for low slope roofing.

The vent looks more like Aluminum than galvanised steel. Just wondering if the issues being discussed as to the finish are relevant if it is aluminum, and what new issues may apply.
