Default minimum height for roof cricket?

Is there a minimum height for a roof cricket? i noticed there is a small "slope" from the center out however its slight.

What kind of material is the chimney on the right? It was attached to an oil fired free standing unit.

903.2.2 Crickets and Saddles. A cricket or saddle shall be installed on the ridge side of any chimney or penetration more than 30 inches wide as measured perpendicuualr to the slope. Cricket or saddle coverings shall be sheet metal or the same material as the roof covering.

Slope is not specified in the code. Your picture looks to be improperly applied flashing and not a cricket or saddle. A cricket/saddle should resemble a gable roof.

More a collection of left over flashing stacked in place.

Looks like a stainless steel flue liner and a wonky aluminum storm collar.

In addition the chimney does not have a proper crown.

Cricket dimensions are dependent on the roof slope:

    SLOPE.......... Height of
    of Roof......... Cricket

12-12...... 1/2 of Width of chimney
    8-12........ 1/3 "
    6-12........ 1/4 "
    4-12........ 1/6 "
    3-12........ 1/8 "

Vern, do you have a source for your numbers. Looks good, just wondering who the authority to reference.

Those are from the IRC, look under Chimneys and Vents, go down to crickets, there is a table there with those numbers on (and, no, I don't recall the code section number).

Thanks Jerry, you know it was kind of a trick answer! A 12:12 roof is a "half-pitch" and a 6:12 roof is a "quarter-pitch", etc. You match the pitch of the cricket to the pitch of the roof it is meeting.

Not picking on anyone in particular, but buy a set of code books and you and other posters can find most all your answers. It is a cost of doing business and besides, the amount of information gleamed from code books is immeasurable. A vast majority of the issues we put in our reports are based in the codes; as evidenced by the number of questions in this and other forums.

    R1003.20 Chimney crickets.
Chimneys shall be provided with crickets when the dimension parallel to the ridgeline is greater than 30 inches (762 mm) and does not intersect the ridgeline. The intersection of the cricket and the chimney shall be flashed and counterflashed in the same manner as normal roof-chimney intersections. Crickets shall be constructed in compliance with Figure R1003.20 and Table R1003.20.

    TABLE R1003.20 CRICKET DIMENSIONS

    ROOF SLOPE H
    12 - 12 1/2 of W
    8 - 12 1/3 of W
    6 - 12 1/4 of W
    4 - 12 1/6 of W
    3 - 12 1/8 of W

Went back and looked up, then copied and pasted the code section.

You have the correct info. now on the cricket. As for the liner, it is missing the listed support clamp. I doubt that termination was listed for use with that liner. If that clamp loosens the cap will slide down blocking the flue. The liner extends too far above the flue tile to where it will cool off and cause excessive creosote formation. What does it look like below? Any insulation visible on that liner? The chimney is too short. horrible flashing.

Keep the fire in the fireplace.

    Cory,

Looks like you are under 10 ft from the chimney to the peak of the roof. This chimney needs to be 3 feet higher than the roof top.
