pest damage?
I see this occassionally. Any idea what it's from? It's usually just at some ridge shingles. This was a 2500 sf roof, and this was the only damage (just a couple shingles). Shingles are estimated to be 15 years old.

Re: pest damage?
My first thoughts would be upon further investigation;
(1) Power Post Beetle in plywood.
A saw dust type residue would be left behind.
(2) Was there something mounted there? ie; was there a device to receive or transmit signals?
I do not see visual or mechanical damage signs of antenna mounting.
(3) Disorientated Woodpecker.
The color of the shingle may have attracted the bird.
Best I can offer.
Good luck.

Re: pest damage?
Thanks, Robert. There was nothing to indicate something mounted there, and I've seen similar damage a few times before. I did report on some pecker damage at the wood siding on one side. I'll have to remember to check if I only find this on tan/wood colored shingles. Methinks I've seen it on light colored shingles too.

Woodpeckers will drum on poles or the side of houses just because they like the noise.
Part of the Hxrny Woodpecker's mating procedure.
There was a Donald Duck comic where he puts metal on his roof to fix the woodpecker damage. Then in the last frame the woodpecker has come back and is banging on the metal roof.
I know, a duck driven bonkers by a woodpecker, only happens in cartoons.

Re: pest damage?
I thought so as well but the ridge cap hole pattern does not coincide with the hole pattern on roof anchor plates.
As well, having used wall and roof anchor plates for many years, < 2 decades, I used fasteners sparingly.
Anchors are removed prior ridge caps being applied. The very least, hole are caulked.
Thanks for the input.
