The end result is that they need to be replaced! If you see those white fiberglass threads, it is time to replace the shingles.

Re: Asphalt comp shingles
Sunburn, the loss of granular coating leaves the fiberglass and asphalt exposed and it degrades. Also, the fire resistance rating is for shingles with the fire resistant granules in place; no granules would likely make the shingles burn more easily.
If you can see the fiberglass strands, it is time to replace the roof.

Depending on the age of the roof, you may be eligible for a credit from the manufacturer, if you want to go that route.

Jeff,
Here is what a few shingles look like that have lost their granules.
Note the white fiberglass mesh that is showing through.

Re: Asphalt comp shingles
These ridge shingles have lost most of their granules and should have been replaced several years ago. Once the granular surface is gone the interior of the shingle will not last long.

How about hail damage evaluation? I have seen some things on insurance company web sites, but wondered if anyone else had some tricks for indicating hail damage.
