The New Jersey Department of Community Affairs, Division of Codes and Standards has announced they will adopt the 2008 National Electrical Code (NEC) on April 6, 2009. The 2008 edition of the NEC with amendments will replace the 2005 NEC as the Electrical Subcode of the Uniform Construction Code. There will be a six month transition period which will end on October 6, 2009.
A summary of the 2008 amendments are as follows:
The proposed amendment to N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.18 C updates references to the 2008 National Electrical Code (NEC).
210.8(A)(2) and (5) (N.J.A.C. 5:23-3.16(b) 3 i): This amendment retains the two exceptions that were deleted from the 2005 NEC. These exceptions exempted certain receptacles from the GFCI requirements of this section. The first exception exempted receptacles located in garages and unfinished basements that are not readily accessible. The second exception exempted receptacles that serve (single receptacle or a duplex receptacle) two appliances located within dedicated space for each appliance that, in normal use, is not easily moved from one place to another and that is cord-and-plug connected.
Sections 342.30 and (C); 344.30 and (C); 352.30 and (C); 355.30 and (C); 358.30 and (C), (N.J.A.C. 5:23-3.16(b) 4iv and v): This amendment deletes these sections of the 2008 NEC. This amendment reverts back to the 2005 requirement. The intent of this amendment is to recognize the enclosures within 3 feet as being the means of support for these raceways.
Section 800.156 (N.J.A.C. 5:23-3.16(b) 7i): This amendment will delete this new section of the 2008 NEC, which contains requirements for communication outlets in a dwelling unit.
The Department specifically proposed that the following new provisions of the 2008 NEC be accepted as written:
Section 210.12(B) – Expanded use of AFCI
Section 406.8(A) & (B) – Weather-resistant Receptacles
