the old exploding dishwasher trick
I was reminded of this whilst on another (non-HI) forum. It's been about 3 years since talked about on this forum, so I though I'd post it again for those that aren't aware:
eLCOSH : Dishwasher exploded
Run that hot water first before turning on the dishwasher in a vacant house!

Re: the old exploding dishwasher trick
The explosions at the Japanese nuclear plants were caused by hydrogen that was created when water flashed to steam and built up in the tops of the containment buildings.During the course of the investigation, a maintenance worker in the housing department pointed out a paragraph in the dishwasher-owner's manual to the NAVOSH specialist. It read, "...under certain conditions, hydrogen gas may be produced in a hotwater system that has not been used for two weeks or more. If the hot-water system has not been used for such a period, before using the dishwasher, turn on all hot-water faucets and let the water flow."
