Wow, everyone is chicken to comment?
From what I can see, it would appear that byproducts of combustion including Black Particulate Matter, have been escaping the fireplace. This may be due, in part, to the vented gas logs not being placed at the back of the firebox. That might be if these logs are oversized but it is hard to tell from the pics.
The white residue is a mineral deposit from flame impingement on the logs--not water intrustion. Common to all gas fireplaces.
Look at the stains at the mouth of the Fp where there are soot trails. The blistered paint and BPM are most likely from spillage of heat and BPM. Of course, if you're leaking those things, you're also getting CO2 and some CO.
