Default Nonvented Firebox / Attic ?

Can someone tell me if the attic space over a nonvented fireplace has to have fireblocking material (gypsum) in place. You could see the top of the firebox from the attic. It would seem it should be there in case the fire was to go beyond the firebox. Correct?
    Anyone, Anyone???

Regardless of whether or not a fireplace is vented you should NOT be able to see down to the fireplace as the chase the fireplace is in should be fireblocked at the ceiling level.
