Default Hardboard siding clearance to concrete

Add on garage built on driveway slab. The siding does not have any clearance to the concrete except for flashing. The flashing tips toward the wall so it should get nice and wet! I can't find a code ref. for clearance to concrete for HB siding. Thought it was the same as stucco 2". Any help appreciated.

    .
No Siding Manufacturer Installation Instructions Allows this type of Installation.
    * clearance varies by Manufacturer.

Most I've seen are 2" - In the absence of a manufacturer's specification I usually go with that and have never been questioned.

The best code reference there is: http://www.jameshardie.com/pdf/insta...lank_north.pdf

Scroll down to page 2 of 4, see Figure 4 and the text just above it.

Dang! By the time I got back to finish my post, Billy beat me to it.

The question is regarding hardboard siding, and Vern received answers for fiber cement, which is not the same thing....... Am I missing something?

Vern, is the siding hardboard or fiber cement?

*I* took "HB" as meaning "Hardie Board", but that may not have been what Vern meant?????

"Hardboard" is a wood product, and if not pressure treated would need to be at 6" (or is it 8") above earth grade.

Nope. Just pointing out that because it is not PT ... it should not be that close to earth grade.

for clearance to concrete for HB siding
I took HB to mean Hardi Board cement based siding.

    Rick,

I picked up a new phrase today from my Dad.

He was explaining about how his neighbor helped him build a shed for his neighbor (a rather long story, but the point of it being that his neighbor is not qualified to even look at a tool, much less actually touch one, that his neighbor bought a post hole digger, you know the type you put into the ground, open the handles to grab the dirt, the pull out of the hole, then repeat until the hole is as deep as you need it - well his neighbor return the post hole digger as being defective because they did not work, then, a few months later was watching my Dad use his post hole diggers and say ... "I didn't know you had to pull the handles apart like that?" ... ), any way, ...

We were talking and I was explaining what we call out: licensed and qualified, but that if one is licensed they are therefore qualified by law, and, by law, to be qualified one must be licensed, so many of us have changed that recommendation to "licensed and competent" and he described his neighbor this way:

"He could not even pour water out of a boot with the directions printed on the bottom of the heel."

Think about that a minute ...

    ... That truly IS "incompetent".

I was basing the fact that it was hardboard off of the title of the thread:

    Hardboard siding clearance to concrete

    Brandon,

I "saw" the title of the thread but apparently did not "read" the title of the thread until just now before I clicked on it to respond, when I notice the title stated "hardboard siding", and I was going to point that out ... but you already did.

Just another example of all of us needing to "read" what we see.

When I read this I thought of you, it sounds like something you might say.

Yep! Glue impregnated cardboard. Hardboard. (Should have been more clear in the post.) This is the same house that has the FUBAR electrical system.

    Rick,

I like that (especially the unstated part based on how that is stated - you'll figure it out if you had not already thought of it ), I may be able to use that shortly with H.G. if he cannot understand what was being talked about ...

Jerry, that was one of my dad's favorite sayings as well. A little more coarse than water, as you indicated. Some of the old sayings are funny and have so much wisdom when you think about them.

My vote is to recommend a min. of 8 feet of clearance above grade for this stuff. It will virtually eliminate the moisture damage problem on a single level house.

I actually was going to use it directed to you yesterday and much earlier today, but I took the high road and posted annotated photos pointing out what WAS being talked about . Since you're cross posting again, I did too.
