Re: Window installation into foundation wall
It is hard to tell, but it sure does look like that window is not sized properly for the opening. It looks like that window is designed to be set into a metal frame (commercial design) and not attached to the wood that we are seeing in the picture.
I don't see how it can be made watertight for any length of time.

Re: Window installation into foundation wall
basement window requires proper finishing by lisenced contractor. A window well will be required to allow proper egress from the window in case of emergenct exit requirements.
Matt, basement windows are usually set back into the opening to reduce likelyhood of leakage. and normally, the siding would be brought down at least as far as to allow proper drip edges and trim install to direct water away from the area.
my guess would be that the window installed here was found in the debris pile behind the house next door and was used instead of ordering a window that would fit properly.
there is no way you can finish that install easily that will not leak.
start over,
Donate the window to the unemployed real estate broker fund, take a tax writeoff for 1000 dollars +the amount of the new window install and everyone is happy. Right?.

Re: Window installation into foundation wall
The correct way is to use a sledge hammer.
Then, after knocking out the window and the so-called bucks, properly install proper bucks, then install the proper window, properly ... of course.
As noted by Scott above, those are typically set back from the face of the wall.

Re: Window installation into foundation wall
A sledge hammer for removal would not be using the proper tool for the appropriate job. You need about 20 feet of chain tied to a pickup truck for a fast and efficient removal, continue to drag to nearest salvage yard.

Re: Window installation into foundation wall
The egress is fine. It is a bedroom window, sill height is 40 inches. There are tumble weeds in the window well covered with some snow.

Re: Window installation into foundation wall
Mathew,
The openings in the foundation walls do typically allow for a wood (pressure treated) frame, that is set back a few inches. The frame is covered with aluminum coil, the window is set in the same manner as it would be on a wood frame wall, then the nailing fins/flanges are covered with trim or brick molding and sealed. This is one of a dozen or so ways of installing a window in a foundation wall. The installation you have posted is not one of them.

Not much is holding the window in place, but I will give you one guess. It comes in a can and is yellow.

Re: Window installation into foundation wall
I think this is the same guy that installed my replacement basement windows. They did the whole basement, 9 windows, in about 45 minutes.
I happened to dodge a hornet that flew past my head, and watch it keep flying right through my new window - see that gap in the corner? When the contractor insisted the installation was correct, I suggested we exchange business cards. He decided he'd better have another look....
I hate these guys. Just let him bid on my next project.
