AFCI BREAKERS REQUIRED IN NEW SERVICE PANEL INSTALLATION
HEY GUYS NEED A SPARKY HERE
OK having a battle with some local sparkys. i have seen new istallations on main breaker boxes lately that do not have afci breakers installed.
in denver every city has a different NEC that they follow.
but should they not be installing afci breakers in all bedrooms and now even most living areas. if they just put in new service panel.
thanks for your help
also please read my last thread on aluminum wire repairs and purple wire nut--need help on both issues

Re: AFCI BREAKERS REQUIRED IN NEW SERVICE PANEL INSTALLATION
Charlie,
You got it.
Think of it like this: I inspected rough electrical in a condo today in which the exterior front porch area has been enclosed and they added many new lights and receptacles - those NEW 'parts' of the circuits will require AFCI protection as the new "outlets" require AFCI protection, which will result in protecting those entire circuits.

Re: AFCI BREAKERS REQUIRED IN NEW SERVICE PANEL INSTALLATION
I am assuming here that these 'sub-cities' ( sorry Jerry I just had too.. ) that have a different or amended NEC are not amending the requirement for afci ? Or maybe the argument is afci is required but the sparky's are saying because it is new work on existing dwelling that the afci is not required ?

Re: AFCI BREAKERS REQUIRED IN NEW SERVICE PANEL INSTALLATION
If the panel is replaced, then no AFCI snake oil required, add or extend a circuit (depending on NEC edition adopted) then AFCI's are required. ATM, California is 2005 NEC.

Re: AFCI BREAKERS REQUIRED IN NEW SERVICE PANEL INSTALLATION
CVF: 2008 NEC is one thing. Has the local AHJ "adopted" that version of the NEC without modification or exclusion?
Heck ... the Texas TREC SOP requires I inspect ALL houses to the current NEC and IRC. Many current "new home construction" does not / will not meet the requirement as the local AHJ has yet to adopt the current code cycle.
Then there are the dang local AHJ exclusions to the current code cycle. Assuming you can get your hands on them.
But ... it is still better than AT&T in many ways!!!!

Re: AFCI BREAKERS REQUIRED IN NEW SERVICE PANEL INSTALLATION
TM -- CVF and I are both AT&T alums. I was with AT&T Labs for 20 -years doing construction and commercial inspections. My last many years with "T" were on classified projects (I had a very high clearance) doing builds/inspections on a contract "T" had with FBI, Secret Service, NSA ... etc.
Another life ... another time.

Re: AFCI BREAKERS REQUIRED IN NEW SERVICE PANEL INSTALLATION
CVF - We traded messages at some time in the past over this past year.
My gray matter just happened to kick it out.
I used to live in Denver and built a few sites for TCG as they were being purchased by "T".
Sites were down in the Denver Tech Center.
