Ridge Vent Installation New Construction

There seems to be a trend in this area to installing roof decking ~1" beneath the ridge board in order to get the space required for ventilation through the ridge vent.

I guess this is all fine and good providing the ridge vent covers the entire ridge. Im seeing areas on both sides of the ridge vent > than 5' in length where the shingles are just laying over the open space. In other words, no support for the ridge cap shingle.

Thoughts?

Im not sure I understand why it "would not be a problem". Threres no support for ~5" of shingle. Wouldnt it be extremely vulnerable to early wear because:
A. Its at the peak of the roof
B. I dont think I ever saw anything saying that is was okay to do this.

If you ever sat on one of these ridges while looking at the ridge vent install, you would definitely feel it smash down from your butt.

I understood you to describe it to be 1" on each side of a 3/4: ridge board, thats 2.75".
5" would be to wide.

GAF instructs to cut 1 3/4" each side of the ridge board.

Never saw a 3/4" ridge board in these parts.

As always, a picture is worth a thousand words. I understand why the roofers did it the way they did, very easy for them to install. Works well for the part covered by the ridge vent. Not good for the part without a ridge vent, but a large gap between decking and ridge board and no support for the shingle.

In my own home I cut the gaps in. It was hard, but I think it was the right thing to do.

The ridge board you pictured is wrong.

With less of a sharp bend at the ridge, the ridge caps will have less of a chance of cracking. I doubt that it will be an issue. I would have to contact the manufacturer on this one if I was concerned.

Whats wrong with the ridge board in the photo? Looks like every other one in this area.

It looks like the ridge board does not exyent to the top of the rafter cuts.

R802.3 Framing details.

Rafters shall be framed to ridge
board or to each other with a gusset plate as a tie. Ridge board
shall be at least 1-inch (25 mm) nominal thickness and not less

in depth than the cut end of the rafter.

The configuration in the photo meets all the requirements you reference. What am I missing here?

The ridge board is > than 1"
The ridge board is the same depth as the rafters joined to it.
