    Hi Robert,

I tried the link on Safari, Mozilla, and Chrome and it comes up with the story.

Home inspection regulations need to be tighter

One organization wants one common standard

    Andrea Macpherson February 27, 2013 12:10 pm
VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – An organization which qualifies home and property inspectors says tighter regulations are needed to make sure home buyers don’t get burned by bad assessments.
John Leech with the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of BC says inspectors are always being held accountable in BC right now.
It’s because this province has four separate independent standards for home inspectors to become certified.
He says this isn’t good for anyone.
“There are different certification policies, four different approaches to handling complaints when something does go wrong. It is time, in the interest of consumer protection, for the regulation to be changed to make sure there is one common standard,” Leech urges.
They’ve been advocating this to the provincial government and Consumer Protection BC.
“There is certainly some interest in terms of the concerns we are bringing forward. At this stage, no decisions have been made,” he adds.
He says a move to license home inspectors was applauded a few years ago, but it’s time to push this issue even further.
He also has some advice for home buyers.
“They need to take extra care in making certain the individuals they hire as an inspector are regulated by a body that has the capacity to assure the highest possible standards… in terms of competencies of the inspector,” Leech explains.

I suspect there are two distinctly different 'standards' being discussed here:
    - association standards/licensing standards which are "minimum" standards
    - personal inspection standards which exceed the "minimum" standards as far as the inspector feels competent to do.

That last one will never change, yet it drives those who try to adhere to "minimum" standards crazy and those inspectors think that if they can raise the "minimum" standards that all inspectors will 'go by the standards'. What those inspectors do not understand is that "minimum" standards will ALWAYS be EXCEEDED by almost every inspector out there, only some will exceed the standards by a little bit while others will exceed the standards by a lot.

Actually I believe its in regards to 4 associations having four distinct entry requirements to their respective associations which have been recognized for licencing (CAHPI, ASTTBC, CANNACHI, NHICC). Each of them have four different complaint and discipline processes.

The standards amongst them are for all intents and purposes virtually the same. Thats the way I read the article.

I would agree. ASTT appears as the 3rd-party certification board but if you pull the curtain back, it's really run and organized by a small core of HI under the ASTT umbrella. At least that's how it was back when I was an active member.
