And for years I've been telling people that in the NE there are craftsmen, in the Mid-Atlantic states there are Journeyman, in the Southern-Atlantic states there are Apprentices, and in Florida there are Laborers ... that contractor must be a Laborer from Florida on vacation up there.

When one does not know what to do ... improvise ... and hope no one sees it - guess that was their motto?

I've always said, especially about roofers, if that is the work they do for the part they know we can see ... what does that say about their work for the part we cannot see?

    Scott,
The screw in the downspout looks like the type that could have a rubber washer under it, so I'm sure it will never leak!

There is flashing there - the shingles were installed first and go in under the mortar, that makes a "flashing" ... right?

    NOT!

I would hate to be the roofer to do a repair around that chimney or replace that roof - would have to removed the bricks first!

It's so bad it's laughable. I'm pretty sure those are drywall screws on top of the cap flashing on the metal roof. I don't even expect to see a metal roof like this on the crap flipped houses I see.

Hot dang! That looks like some good 'ol Georgia quality construction right there. Is installation of counter-flashing on brick veneer a random occurring phenomena?

There are ways to fix all of that, but somehow I think those are just the parts that are easy to see.

I'm really curious as to what the builder is doing about this. There's no way anybody could defend this slop work.

I had e-mailed the buyer last week a couple days after the inspection to see if they had any questions as they were not preset for my inspection but I never heard back. And no idea if they got a CO for the house.

I just inspected a new construction home. They wouldn't let me on the roof............liability they claimed.

I informed the buyer and told him that I had found problems on new construction roofs before, though rarely.

    and moved on......

Any state that does NOT have or allow unions is going to have this problem. Unions require training and experience and that knowledge just as any tribal knowledge flows down throught he tribe.

Florida is one of the WORST states regarding ANY construction work. I have followed the rules here and hired electrical and pllumbing contractros for commercial work and for residential at times. I have had to tear out thier work and do it myself in the end. It was faster, easier and cheaper than dealing with the contractor.

Florida = license to steal, rob, rape and pillage.

They are more concerened with business accounting here than ability.

The RISK IS YOURS NOT THIERS. You don't work for the contractor. You are a private contractor. If anyone told me I "couldn't go there" I would be there in a flash, you can beleive that. I would write ANYTHING up and note that I was told by "name" that I could not walk to the roof to inspect. That ends any issue about fixing it.

You may have gained liability by not inspecting.

Youy may want to call the manufacturer and arrange an inspection by them for your client to assure the warranty is in place.

This is where some contractors need to get up to speed not only in their work however with customers and vice versa. An ipad that has jobs before and after pics is handy when talking to new customers to show the work you do. This is great for new companies. ..I think the guy that did this was vacationing in CA. Seen work about like that out here…..

    Dirk,

What you say makes no sense at all - just look at the corruption in the unions.

    Besides:

Seems like you are not aware of a crucial fact affecting the logic of what you posted:

    FLORIDA DOES ALLOW UNIONS!

There are many of unions in Florida, including, but not limited to: PLUMBERS, ELECTRICIANS, etc.

    - So ... what was it you were saying about "Any state that does NOT have or allow unions is going to have this problem. Unions require training and experience and that knowledge just as any tribal knowledge flows down throught he tribe."?

"Florida is one of the WORST states regarding ANY construction work."

Not based on some of the photos I've seen here.

EVERY STATE will have BAD contractors ... BAD code inspectors ... BAD home inspectors ... BAD buyers ... BAD insurance companies ... BAD attorneys ... BAD etc.

Florida just happens to be one of the more populous states and has a climate which accommodates working outside ALL YEAR, that makes it possible for the above BAD persons to do BAD things ALL YEAR.

    Dirk,

Every state allows unions. My observation is that the most skilled tradespeople will leave unions and go to work for themselves for the simple reason that they like to be their own boss and make more money. My other observation mirrors Jerry's.
    .............................

Two days ago, I'm walking the roof of a twelve year old house. Hidden from ground view, is an unpainted rake wall. Never painted! Since few new home buyers around here do inspections, it's likely that the the builder never told an inspector to stay off of the roof.

If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

    Jerry,

You should visit North Texas, it would blow your mind (born and raised in Orlando, the 3 years here have just about killed me)

    Mike,

You mean you have laborers-in-training there?

I am doing code inspections on a project near Orlando for a contractor from Texas ... I know what you mean, been on this project since last September and will hopefully be done with it in November, but maybe not until after the first of the year - they just do not know what actual construction is ... and that is only comparing it to Florida Laborer construction.
