Heat Pump?
Freddie Mac foreclosure with exterior heat pump, York M # YHJD42S41S7A. Thermostat had settings for only heat and cool. When heat set, a high efficiency furnace provided heat, and on cool setting, the heat pump was operational but did not produce cold air. Wondering if this was a wrong install as this was installed after foreclosure process initiated. Also, can heat pump be wired only cooling?

Re: Heat Pump?
Sidney, sorry I do not do foreclosures.
1: Did the serial numbers on the compressor?
The year on manufacturing is 1979 2000 but the fourth letter, # YHJ(D)42S41S7A
does not match the literature on Building Intelligence Center.
Heat Pumps life expectancy is 15 years.
Hope that helps.

Re: Heat Pump?
I forgot to ask, was the thermostat set to emergency heat?

Re: Heat Pump?
Sidney,
A heat pump is, basically, just an air conditioning system wit a reversing valve which reverses the direction of refrigerant flow: a) cooling uses the indoor coil as the evaporator coil and the outdoor coil as the condenser coil - this transfer heat from inside to outside; b) heating uses the indoor coil as the evaporator coil and the outdoor coil as the condenser coil - this transfers heat from outside to inside.
If the unit was wired incorrectly, the thermostat wired incorrect, an incorrect thermostat installed, etc, a heat pump could be wired to 'only heat' or 'only cool'.
Heat pumps typically also have a back up heat strip, thus the thermostat will have an emergency heat setting which allows just the heat strip to operate.
I may be possible to wire it so the emergency heat strip turns on when in cooling mode - which could produce nothing positive (no heating and no cooling).

Re: Heat Pump?
High efficiency heat, I am thinking gas heat. While there are dual fuel heat pumps, they will still have Emergency Heat setting on thermostat.
This could be just a gas pak standard HVAC unit. Heat and Cool on thermostat.
The fact that is wasn't getting cold air is another matter. Did compressor kick in?
