Default water heater in hall closet

Does a water heater in a hall closet have to have a door? I know that there are formulas to allow taking combustion air from the living area but does it have to have a door with upper and lower vents?

A door is not required, but that exposes the gas water heater to children, pets, etc.

The vents don't have to be in the door either. They can be in a wall, or come from the attic with two pipes.

Thanks a lot. That answers my question.
