Re: Goodman Tonage
I was told the first number is the SEER rating.

Re: Goodman Tonage
Their product information is somewhat confusing as it says two things: "Up to 15 SEER", and then it says "14" in the model number indicates 14 SEER???
Says "Up to 15 SEER" - http://www.goodmanmfg.com/products/h.../14-seer-gsz14 (which likely depends on what it is matched too ... match it to an air handler which is not rated with that condenser unit and there may be no listed SEER for it)
From the link above, click "Product Specifications" and it goes to this, which says that "14" indicates 14 SEER (on 2nd page), and breaks down the serial model number meanings - http://www.goodmanmfg.com/pdfviewer....rsn=54b85ac0_0

Re: Goodman Tonage
Lennox also puts the SEER rating on the model number just before the btu numbers. Honestly, I don't really pay that much attention to the SEER ratings while inspecting. It was just a bit of info I got from a HVAC guy.

Look at page 2 for the nomenclature diagram.
Goodman refers to the numbers in question on the data plate as the Seer and efficiency.
While there are exceptions if you don't install properly matched components, that is also true of the tonnage rating. But the data plate is the starting place for the component as provided by the manufacturer, that is its design.

Re: Goodman Tonage
Thank you Jim.
That was my point - just because it says 14, and the manufacturer says it stands for 14 .. or some other SEER rating ... but 14 is the initial starting point - I wouldn't say that it was 14 SEER.
Before saying or indicating that it was 14 SEER, I would put the information for both units into the website and see what it says.
And then I still wouldn't say that it was 14 SEER, I would say 'according to this website (I forgot the name of it right now), the outside unit and inside unit combination are listed as 14 SEER'.
Too many variables to say that it is 14 SEER.
