Charlie,
Real life is sooo much stranger than fiction - isn't it?
Who would ever have thought of THAT way to do a sediment trap wrong?
Or do you have the photo upside and the water heater was installed upside down (the sediment trap would still be wrong, but at least wrong in a conceivable way).

Actually, that is a helium trap. In case any helium is in the piping, it will collect there.

Nope.
Helium will simply continue to rise straight through the tee and bypass that 'anti-gas hammer' device ... unlike water hammer devices which are at least one size larger, gas molecules are smaller than water molecules so gas hammer devices can be the same size.
But I like your thinking.
