They found the cause of the collapse. Just what they suspected.

Man, it takes one heck of a reinforced building to topple over in one piece!

Looking at the ground where it was setting, I'm guessing insufficient embedment of the pilings and instability of the soil - where the building WAS setting, the soil is sloping like the side of a hill.

Almost like the soil washed out along the back of the building and the building had no choice but to topple over backward as the rear of the building sank into nothingness (where the soil was).

The Lotus Riverside Court is a development of 11 identical buildings, with move-in dates set for next May.

You do have to admire their planning of the site and area, though ...

How many areas leave just the right amount of open space between buildings to allow for one to topple over and not strike the next building and take it domino effect?

Those guys were good in that aspect.

The cause of a building collapse in Shanghai was due to a pressure difference on two sides of the structure, according to an investigation report released at a government press conference on July 3, Friday morning.

During construction, a 4.6-meter-deep underground garage was dug on the south side of the building while a mound of soil heaped up to 10 meters high was located on the other side. This caused a difference in pressure on two sites of the building, which resulted in its collapse.

Gravity is what brought it down.

Now that it's down, is it for rent?

While the electricity system may well work okay sideways - except for that danged requirement to have the breakers operate other-than-vertically-down-to-'ON' ... which some will now be ...

... and the plumbing supply system probably will not be affected on the horizontal ...

... one needs to take gravity into consideration for the drainage system operation ...

Chinese fuses, not directional. Bucket latrines, no loitering. Here's your rice, now get back to work.
