Default Chimney Structure in Crawl Space

Is this irregular spacing of blocks at the base of the chimney acceptable? It seems like abstract and random placement but i've not been exposed to much chimney design. This was supporting a 2 story chimney with 2 fireplaces in a 1970's split level.

I'm thinking...Moonshine! However, I think the artist would be eligible for an award and a Government Funded Grant if entered in a "National endowment for the Arts" Exibit...to bad much of this "art" is hidden away in crawl spaces only to be appreciated by us home inspectors and the occasional cockroach.

It would be easy to write the comment on the report...OMG or WT_ should be enough!

Coming from a famnily of brick masons. Best work of art I have ever seen. if that was built in the 70 It has done a fine job of standing. Back to the drawing board for me

It is obvious this block structure has not been there since the 1970s. Unless this home is inside a vacuum where dust and atmospheric chemicals do not exist. I wonder if there is a real chimney inside this facade?

You got me wondering...I'm wondering if there is a body behind it...

    WOW!

Measure once, build twice... or is it the other way around?

I'm...speechless. I honestly don't think I've ever seen worse. This could not have been built by masons. No self respecting mason would do this. Modular Unit masonry is where mason's begin their training/education.

This was built by someone who's structural knowledge began and ended with Legos.

I especially like the big honkin' cantilever on the right side.

Now why would you go and degrade Legos like that?

That and those 8x8x16 hollow CMU standing on end - that is a great touch for artistic talent ... of course, it is that 8x8x16 on end which is supporting "the big honkin' cantilever on the right side.".

That deserves some type of award... I want to shake that man's hand. He has taken a relatively simple concept and turned it into abstract art.

What is really interesting about this is that it would have been easier to build it right. There is much creativity going on there that seems to be a wasted effort.

Absolutely right Rod. This was much harder to build than doing the standard bond pattern.

I guess the nature of this installation was the nature of my OP. It's so bizarre and complex that there may have been some justification (far out as it may be). So far nothing has come to mind. Any brainstorms would be appreciated.

I showed the picture to my wife, and it got a 'O my God, how can they get away with that???? That's terrible'. Her construction background is limited to me showing her disasters like this.

    The real story......

Billie Boy Bob, decided he wanted a couple of fireplaces after he had downed a couple of six packs on a Saturday afternoon but there were a couple of good football games on TV.

Not wanting to disappoint his wife, he sent his 7 year old down to build the base. His 7 year was a intermediate Lego expert....

.......... makes you wonder how the rest of it was done.
