    Looks like some sort of heat exchanger.
    Maybe for heating water.

    This was part of an old Heat Recovery System that utilized the Heat given off from your Air-Conditioner to heat water for your house.

    The Heat that an outside AC Unit usually puts into the air was instead used to make hot water.

    This System was abandoned and a newer style split AC system was installed.

    Then is that where the extra piping for the hot water heater is going?
