Default Obama vs McCain: It's about your money

In today's Wall Street Journal SUNDAY, there is a great article that explains where each candidate stands, and what will happen under their plans. Covered are: Sort Term Economic Relief, Income Taxes, Estate Taxes and AMT, Health Care, Investments, and Retirement and Social Security.

It's only a half page, so even the most attention challenged of us can get through it. AND, it appears to be impartial.

Impartial? Who needs impartial. I want more mudslinging.

By-the-by, there was an recent article in my paper (apparently picked up from the Washington Post) about the history of mudslinging in presidential races.

No need to hold off on commenting if you've read the article Jack referenced. This is the "General Chit Chat" section. Just be aware that your comments may kick up a dust storm.

General chit chat and considering a president only gets voted on every 4 years and the talk goes on for a month or so. Nothing wrong with talking and reading other vue points. Most folks even down to their last week in the candidates running are still trying to decipher exactly what each candidate is pushing on the public.

Mark, The definition of this thread is: "Discussions Unrelated To Home Inspections or Commercial Inspections ... For Home Inspectors & Commercial Inspectors".

Since the election is a very important issue, I think this is something that many may find interesting.

Please note that there was nothing in my post that said anything pro or con about either candidate.

If you took the time to read the article you would note that it also only gave the facts and did not lean either way.

There is way too much crap being slung around by both sides, and it is almost impossible to discern what is fact or not.

I for one, really wanted to know what these guy's plans are, and thought maybe someone else might too. If you don't care, that's fine by me.

I didn't read the article. I am not going to allow my biased opinion to be swayed by the facts.

It's just "bidenss as usual", you know.

Take the financial crisis, for example.

The majority of people, liberal and conservative alike, are self-interested and ahistorical. They forget that their parents and grandparents suffered the consequences of willful blindness to the logical and inevitable effects of human nature, and so succumb to the allure of the claim that "This time it's really different". For example to a fantasy that if you make loans to people who clearly can't afford to repay them, there is some magical operation of sufficiently sophisticated financial techniques that can guarantee that when the music stops you will have a chair.

Such has always been, and such will always be - the best you can hope for when you are surrounded by fools in greed is that as a society we will gradually learn to better protect the reasonable, prudent, and honest from the unreasonable, imprudent and dishonest by protecting the latter from the worst of their own results.

It's galling of course to the rest of us to foot the bill. But unfortunately the operation of any sort of reasonably representative government will inevitably put greedy fools in power in the service of naïve ideology (be it of the left or right - there are plentiful examples of both). This is the natural state of human affairs, and it's less bad than the other options on offer.

Now, for this last swing of the pendulum, the mechanisms of economic destruction have been driven by "conservative" ideologues and ideology. Necessary political corrections became ideological overshoot, and (imagine that) the voters are apparently about to throw the rascals out, and vote a new set of rascals in.

No doubt Obama will be unmasked for what he truly is: a 21st century "Rockefeller Republican" who would be quite comfortable in the moderate wing of the Tory party in today's UK.

And despite conservative gnashing of teeth a certain number of pressing concerns (for example, healthcare which avoids the prospect of bankruptcy as a result of bad luck) that have been ignored by the current proprietors despite the voters' wishes will be addressed - likely in the face of Republican obstructionism that will cost conservatives a few more Senate seats in 2010.

(And, BTW, you can be quite certain it won't be "Socialized Medicine" in the form in which most here fear it. It will instead take the form of a fire hose of taxpayer dollars showered upon the large private healthcare administrative companies, a generous dollop of which will continue to go into their scandalous levels of overhead expense. Nevertheless people like self-employed home inspectors will get covered. And you can be sure that that the program once established will be quite popular; taxpayers everywhere on earth grouse about their health care system irrespective of its design, but there is nowhere on earth that voters have been willing to go back to a fully privatized system where insurers get to cherry-pick their customers and unilaterally set the terms of health care delivery.)

But before too long, the Democrats will fall into ideological overshoot themselves. And perhaps in the meantime their ideological blindness will create some sort of disastrous financial conundrum of their own, grounded in their own naïve refusal to confront human nature.

And a newly reconstituted conservative movement will return to power.

    Rinse, and repeat.

    "Bidenss as usual".

IMHO the American people have lost their will. Look at Wall Street, look at our real estate market people; agents, appraisers and lenders, look at our banks, look at the drug cartels, look at the oil folks, then look at Washington DC and who is supposed to be representing us? This deal is totally non-partisan, both parties are at fault and there's no use addressing our sitting president. Now for a glass of decent chardonnay……………………………. .

I can only hope the election comes and goes quickly (Please, please no hanging chad!) so that people can get on with life. We need some real news to knock the economy off the front page. Not wanting any disasters or anything, just something to get peoples minds occupied with something normal.
