this was connected to the supply line of the adjacent dishwasher. Is it some sort of heater? i didnt see any power lines, but it does have a power symbol?

I may be a flow control valve, similar to a Flood Stop. They may have disconnected the sensor wire, which is a low voltage wire connected to the valve. Notice the flow direction arrow.

It appears to be made for a larger pipe, so I doubt it's for a dishwasher exclusively. The tubing goes from 3/8 to 1/2 to 3/4.

It could also be one of those water magnets, used to "soften" water.

    Dom.

The pipe on the tip of the flow direction arrow looks like drain pipe, not supply pipe.

Also note the electrical lightning symbol further down that same side, that would seem to be the electrical connection point (with nothing being connected to it.

Supplying in from the left is the dishwasher supply, which is full pressure; I suspect that the pipe leaving the unit is not designed for full pressure.

What's that drain line looking hose coming up from the bottom toward the sink - the drain line?

What is it? I don't know, but it looks like some type of solenoid being as it has a water inlet, a water outlet, and an electrical connection point (with nothing connected to it).

It's the water supply for a dishwasher. I've installed some like that before, trying to remember the brand. Basically, it's got a female hose thread connection on that beast to supply the dishwasher. It's hard to tell with the flash reflecting off the metal like that, but there's a few transitions there to get it down to 3/8 OD supply tubing.

    Joshua,

But what is it? Or rather, what does it do?

I know 'this looks bad too', but what can I say?

From their manuals, it appears to be some kind of pressure/flow sensing device. It says the pressure must be between 4.5-145 psi to operate. (That's a hell of a range.)

    Peter,

First, welcome to THE inspectors board.

Second, thank you for that information, I presumed that the 'lightning bolt' represented a location for connecting wiring, only to be shown that it is only an 'orientation direction indicator'.

    Not installed per manufactures instructions!

Don't have any idea of the consequence!

So the Meile manual shows how it should be installed. There's still nothing about what it does. Does it heat the water flowing through it?
