TREC Roof Inspections

[A.D. Miller]

I have long been at odds with the TREC Inspector Committee (or whatever it is they call themselves nowadays) and their misguided SOP for inspectors. At the top of the list, during the last revision for the worst, stands the requirement to rip off shingles in order to ascertain that they have been properly fastened. As if this were of the utmost importance.

The attached article indicates that the NRCA feels the same way as I do. Wouldn't it be nice if the authors of our SOP actually read things and kept up with the times, instead of shooting from the hip, or lower?

Don't bother to copy this and send it to them (as if most of you actually would). I already took care of that little chore.

Jake: ARMA is OK. NRCA is better, in my opinion. Certainteed also produces a wealth of good information from their roofing research. Other sources include ASTM, ANSI, UL, ICC-ES, FEMA, Texas Department of Insurance, Texas Tech Wind Science & engineering Research Center, and the list goes on . . .

Matt: Though I understand your reasoning here, I must point out a few cogent points that may clarify my choice of location wording.

1. Texas is the Southwest.

2. Texans do not need the added credibility others might find comforting.

3. The rest of the contiguous 47 states which are currently genuflecting at the border of Texas may think they will become like us someday through osmosis, but that is never going to happen.

Ted: I thought a couple of hundred would suffice for now. I didn't want to thoroughly shame all of the Texan wannabees. I'm not that kind of guy.

I could have mentioned that we would still be communicating via fax or stringed soup cans if it weren't for Texans. Bill Gates and Steve Jobs would have ended up as geek accountants without the boys at Texas Instruments. For the gearheads there would be no Shelby Mustangs sans Carroll Shelby.

I purposely left the Bush assholes in the list, not because I really consider their Yankee asses Texan, but because, though they are over-the-top F'd Up, they are somewhat entertaining whenever they aren't wrecking the government or the world economy. Like watching village idiots in action. A kind of cathartic, but for the grace of Sam Houston, there go I, kind of thing.
