Attic Pull-Down Stair Heights?

What is the typical standard height for a pull-down staircase to be installed and more importantly, what is the maximum ceiling height in which one can be installed-at least without being custom built? Thanks

Depends on the stair, but I've seen them for 12 foot ceilings, the stairs were one piece sliding ones similar to this (may have been this): http://www.bessler.com/100.html

With a one piece stair which pulls down and is counter balanced, it can be as long as the trees grow tall ... wait, that's a "stair" and the maximum height between landings is 12 feet, is it not? ... Oh, wait, those are actually "ladders" - ummm ... okay.
