This answer is based on "typical" installation instructions, and you would need the installation instructions for that particular appliance to verify the clearance as there is some variation between appliances and manufacturers, that said ...

On the "typical" clearance chart that would be "D*" and states: (the "*" goes with the 30" shown below)
- 18" vertical clearance to unventilated soffit or to ventilated soffit located above the terminal
- *30" for vinyl clad soffits and below electrical service

I just put one of these in and the manual, if the same, states that the measurment be taken from the part the sticks out and not from the top of the actual unit. Hope thats clear.
