CO has gotten a little out of hand with that kind of stuff. We've been going to Telluride every year for a music festival, and they just keep piling the taxes onto the lodging. We don't rent a car, but I'm not at all surprised. It's about 25% tax on top of the lodging rate that they "quote" you. It makes a big difference at the prices you pay in that town. I think they try and hang as much as they can on the tourists, since you can't vote against the legislators.

We are going to tour through the mountains of Colorado, Utah, Idaho and Wyoming for a week or so .. hoping to find some cooler weather. I guess we'll find some of those motel taxes too.

Try renting a car at the Las Vegas airport... I think last time I did it was over $100 in taxes and fees for three days.

Thanks, Matt. I'm feeling better already. My tax + is only $181 for 8 days.

I rented a car at the RIO in Vegas last October. It was right at $150 less for the four days that I had it, compared to renting it at the airport. I think it was National or Alamo.

Maybe I shouldn't tee off on CO too much. Santa Fe is probably just as bad, but I never actually stay there, so I wouldn't know. I'm sure they hit the hotel tax as hard as they think they can get away with.

Scott, I think you hit it -- I noticed that a portion of the tax was for airport concession .. 11%.
