    Default I-Joists as Roof Rafters

This is the 1st time I've seen this so I'm not sure what to make of it. The house I looked at yesterday had some areas of the roof rafters framed with I-joists. You'll see in the attached pics that the ends of the I-joists have had filler boards installed over the webs at the tail ends.

It doesn't look right but I'm not sure what to think.

    Thoughts?

    Nick,

    Try here: http://www.askcodeman.com/tech_docs/...ts/TJ_9001.pdf

Sections 6 and 7 - those photos do not look right.

    Also other sections.

Thanks Jerry. Very good reference material. The install definitely appears wrong on a few counts:

1 - the ends of the I-joist are notched and none of those instructions show any notching and the notching that was don on the ones I saw will place the entire load on the upper half or the I-joist

2 - the filler boards in my pics are secured with what appear to be staples and the refernce material you included calls for 10d nails at minimum

There may be an engineers report for this particular installation on this house. You might check with the AHJ and see if they have a copy of a report.

I know anytime we have a "different" situation like that, we require a report from the engineer that manufactured the trusses.

What is supporting the joists shown in the picture?Did you look under the insulation for additional support?
