Default Half of a chimney cricket

Chimney width was 38 inches, so a cricket is required. But I am not sure what this is.

That would be a Dam ( water diverted to check if the Ridge Vent will Drain Water ) as well as let air through the Attic Space.

Well, as Billy said it is a Dam! Damn Stupid!

I would give the roofer an "E" for effort and the builder an "F"! It is wrong in so many ways. Not to mention a bad location. I bet that the shroud around the flue is not listed either.

I think a cricket was intended to be installed ... and somewhere along the way that intent turned into "LUNCH TIME GUYS!" and no one finished it after lunch.

Even then, though, it was not going to be wide enough.

Cool Re: Half of a chimney cricket

I agree with Jerry---it'd s one legged cricket that got left behind.

    So what's inside that termination?

Is this a factory built fireplace chase with a beautiful unlisted illegal shroud?

One boiler vent termination and gas fireplace vent termination.

What that is is a pile of rubble, with the illusion that someday it will grow up to be a chimney.

Then that makes it an unlisted illegal shroud, which must be removed and is a fire and CO hazard. Would make a nice decoration somewhere.....just not on a chimney.

My guess is that the house was re-roofed and the cricket was removed leaving the flashing in place. The roofer sold the ridge vent and there was no longer room for the cricket. The ridge vent could have been interrupted for the space required for the cricket/saddle.

I would also think that the house was re-roofed and the cricket was removed leaving the flashing in place.
