Default Who knows what this is

Any guess on what the funny looking electrical device is in the photo. Looks like the conductors that are routed through it return to the main electrical transformer at the street. The home was built around 1963

Is it an arrestor of some sort?

    Thanks

Looks like a telephone line splice.
You sure it was on the power lines?

I am with Jim on this one. Have seen the same items on the telephone lines on the street poles.

I've seen this on older overhead telephone wiring. looks like the telephone company either got cheap or lazy...

Looks to me like there is a 50 or 100 pair phone cable running in the bottom end. Any chance there was a business in the house at one time? Ma Bell wouldn't haev installed something like that on a house without a reason (and permission)

If it does contain service cable/wires somebody's got some work to do.
