    Default Holmes Home Inspection

Did anyone watch Mike Holmes new show Holmes Inspection on HGTV?

I was not overly impressed with the show which quickly turned into a major renovation just like the original series Holmes on Homes.

Not a lot of detail and nothing on inspection standards, code of ethics, associations, background on the inspection process, limitations. How convenient.

I have the same level of interest in watching a show about home inspections as a police offer would have in watching COPS. I see enough crap at work. I don't need to see it in my down time.

I often comment to my wife (as I'm being dragged through countless home buying shows) that there is never any accurate emphisas on the HI aspect of things.

All they do is run some poor couple through a bunch of houses and show which one they picked. I always figure they do the HI after they choose and the young couple that once had their fairytale house is left crying on their knees in the driveway once they find out what a POS they really chose.

As usual Mike and his writers and producers spin a good story and paint the industry in a bad light.

Mike was on a radio call in show the other day, I managed to get through and talk to Mike and asked what SOP his inspections are conducted to and I mentioned that current industry standards had withstood the courts litmus tests and that the inspections were visual in nature for a reason. The line went dead and Mike went on a rant on how he was going to rewrite the standards to his liking much like is done with Car Facts were you can call a 1-800 number to find out about the used car you are about to buy.

He hasn't a clue and it came a across in the show.

That show was inadequate and would give wrong ideas to the new bees. There is a lot more to it than is shown.

Fine, In order to do what he considered correct an inspection will cost a few thousand dollars with every type of specialist involved. Not to mention the need to have a full TV crew on site to document the entire thing for 20 grand or so

Do you remember when HGTV was for guys? Stright Guys... Back in the late 90's they would have 1/2 hour shows on how to re seat a toilet or shingle a shead....it was great. Now it is Gay men putting glitter in paint and stapeling fabric to head boards.

Foot note. I have nothing against gays....The first time I tried it, I KNEW I wasn't gay.

I started to comment on the gay crap and wrote lengthly stories several times and kept deleting them.

To make it short. I think all the gay crap has gone way to far. It seems the more freakish there antics the more it is put in someones elses face ands the demand for acceptance is absurd.

Just deleted a lot more. Sorry........Just freaking absurd.

I have to admit I watched the show "Holmes on Homes" HGTV last weekend. The program dealt with a job to re-do what a previous contractor had done at an attic addition. I was very impressed with the findings of faults from the previous contractor and to say the least the homeowners were taken to the bank by the original contractor. Holmes actually did a very competent job and moreover did a good job of explaining the issues for the time they had.
While I haven't seen a show on "inspecting" I will give a thumbs up for the show I saw.

I find Mike's new show quite interesting but find his attitude (holier than thou) and constant bashing of home inspectors very annoying.

It's easy to come in and do an after-the-fact home inspection, after the new owners have lived in it for a few months and discovered problems first-hand AND after he's had a chance to read the previous inspector's report, AND with a demolition crew. His constant bashing of home inspectors pisses me off.

His home inspection Co. is fairly new and it'll be interesting to see what happens once his chosen home inspectors start missing stuff. I wonder if it'll ever hit the news or will Mike's crew simply go in and 'make it right"?

The Holmes show is mildly interesting but it's just TV and some of the melodrama is laughable at best and really just gets irritating. Omigod now we have to replace the whole kitchen counter as well (wring hands and look griefstricken)
And as mentioned above, any idiot can go in after several months with a crew and find pre-existing problems. The whole thing really is smoke and mirrors.. rememeber it's just tv. They just don't happen to pick a house at random and start tearing it apart. Oops sorry lady... can't find anything wrong behind this wall, sorry about your luck. Maybe we'll come back next week to fix it but we gotta move on... no advertising revenue here. :-|
They naturally will have a whole crew scoping out 'possibles' to make the best show. It's just tv but the public won't understand that and it's shamelessly misleading.
Holmes might be a good contractor but the concept of a home inspection as the industry has developed simply escapes him. In truth he is not qualified to do one.

One thing he has which we can all be envious of is trust. The perception is that he can do no wrong, and that is a powerful place to be. Garry, I see you're right in his backyard, best stay on his good side! That goes for all of us, actually.
Apply for a spot on his show? How's your acting?

Raymond, we're waiting for you to set that guy straight! If anybody can!

    John

I am on Mikes forum and believe me I have raised and corrected some of the issues with what others think Mike should be doing or is doing.

Now it seems Mike is being touted as a mould expert yet I don't see any credentials.
