Either the between your knees or just nudge it with your knee. If it is loose it will move. If it moves in the slightest it is loose. There is no close to moving. It's loose or it's not. The wax ring seal is now broken if you can move it at all. You cannot just tighten the toilet back down and it's all better. The wax ring does not swell back up. It might not be leaking water but it could be leaking gas.

Bob, Chuck and Ted are wimps. Ya gotta reach around the bowl, kind a like you are giving it a bear hug! Then if you can move it with your arms and hands it is loose.

Hope you're up to date on all your shots with that technique Scott. I ain't putting my bare hands on any toilet bowl, including the one in my own house. I use my foot and nudge the bowl. Afterwards, I burn my shoes .

I just give them a swift kick with the shoe, if it moves it is loose.

Many times (at least I did) you will find them "move" be not be "loose" ... i.e., the toilet itself is securely attached to the floor flange (not "loose") but the floor flange is not securely attached to the floor (allowing the toilet to "move") - this means the toilet is "loose".

I'm with Scott. Well, I don't really bear-hug the things, but I do use my hands. Hey, that's what an immune system is for! Use it or lose it!

I lift the lid, grab the rim bare handed enjoying the cool porceline while anchoring my fingers in the holes that fill the toilet with water and give it a pull side to side. If it moves it is loose!

I straddle the toilet with my legs, (standing up of course) and wiggle the toilet an the tank. I call this the toilet dance. If it moves I write it up as loose.
