    Default Little or no re-bar.

I've been watching the disaster in Haiti. Very little re-bar in the rubble. I have to wonder how many lives could have been saved with only minimal building codes? Very sad to have happen in todays world.

I was thinking the same thing. I have seen reports from there before the earthquake of their poor building practices. Rebar costs money and contractors make more money if they omit the reinforcing steel. Of course some of those building occassionall collapse (e.g., a school that collapsed about a year ago in Port-au-Prince). And certainly many of them will collapse in a major earthquake. Such is life - and death - in a third world country.
