Default Garage door sprint safety cable requirements

Do all unrestrained vehicle door coil springs require a safety cable, or only certain types?

I didn't get a picture of this entire spring arrangement: off to the right, the end of each spring is attached to one end of a short length of cable. The cable runs through the sheave of a pulley, which has a second cable attached to the pulley's strap, this second cable makes the connection to the door.

It's hard for me to imagine how a safety cable could be inserted through the springs without interfering with their operation, OTOH things could certainly get nasty if a spring or its connection point failed.

I did not note the identity of the door operator's manufacture so I can go back to their instructions,.

Is anyone familiar with the safety cable requirements for this arrangement?

    Thanks.

I don't believe they are required in MN, however I always recommend them when I see they are not installed.

I use this when questioned about safety cables in extension springs.

There should be a safety cable running through the spring(s).
Had a spring break in my own home a couple of years ago, the spring with the cable did a lot of damage to the support brackets, don't even want to think about what would have happened if the cable wasn't there.
