    Default Is this masonite siding?

This siding seemed very easy to damage. It was really soft and it appears that the original surface has worn leaving just the paint to protect it..

It's impossible to tell for sure without removal of the siding and reading the stamps on the back. Masonite is a brand of compressed fiberboard siding, like Kleenex is a brand of facial tissue.

If the question was "Is this compressed fiberboard siding?" then the answer would be yes it is.

In my reports I refer to it as "hardboard siding" as Masonite is a brand name.

Good point and thank you. Hardboard or compressed fiber may be a better description.

Other than maintaining the paint here, are there any other concerns with this type of siding? If the original surface wears as in the pictures, will paint be sufficient to prevent further issues?

Over driven nails is the most common problem I see. All over driven nails need to be sealed or the board will swell up like a poisend pup. The other thing to look for is paint on the bottom edge of the bottom course, almost always over looked.

Depending on age the other problem is asbestos.

Back in the 70's the hardboard siding wasn't so hardboard. There was a time in the construction industry that this type of siding was used quite a bit and it wasn't worth nailing up, it was so soft that you could very easily break it without much effort, but the builders loved it.

I bet this is that type of hard(soft)board.

That sounds like what this is. It certainly is not hard, I could indent it with my finger. It doesn't seem like a great siding product..

To protect the material from moisture:

    Seal overdriven nails.
Install corner caps and joint covers.
    Seal all penetrations.
Don't install the siding within 3" of soil or flat surfaces.

    Jon,
We see, and replace, a lot of this siding. In my area, very seldom was a moisture barrier installed, occasionally felt was put on the walls, but usually when the siding reaches the condition in your pics, the damage is beyond just the siding.

Yes, if only I could rip the siding off and look.

I think I'll stick with what I can see and leave it at that. These are the frustrations with being a home inspector.. No destructive investigation allowed...

Jon, I was not suggesting that you rip the siding off!

You asked if there were any other concerns with this type of siding. I was simply letting you know what I have encountered with type of siding......that's all.

Sorry, I didn't mean that in a negative way I know you were not suggesting that.

No worries... Sometimes I really do wish I could take just a little peak...
