    Default true engineering

Always admired some of the things you guys came across during inspections. Well today I finally hit the Jack Pot. The owner of the fine estate wanted to hang a fan in the Master bedroom. Well If the ceiling light junction box will not hold the fan, just take a 2x4 and some rope.

What makes you think the ceiling fan isn't properly supported? I can't recall the mfr of that support rod, but I believe they were popular in the 60's to provide support for ceiling fans (someone older than me would need to confirm this). The bar should be bolted into the joists on each side. I wonder if the rope was used to hold the bar in place during adjustment and was just left there, or are we really dealing with a situation where the support bar wasn't properly supported itself.

My grandfather used to own multiple rent houses in Dallas. He once bought one hundred cast iron ceiling fans from a demolition company hired to demolish an old office building downtown. He installed those fans in every room of his rent houses using standard light fixture boxes and bailing wire. They are still there, going on 40 years later.
