A boiler is still a water heater. At least Rick didnt call it a "hot" water heater.

    Paul,

We may not like the term, "hot water heaters" but if you Google the term you will find over 11million hits for the term therefore it is a commonly used.

Its kind of like "Ice cooler". How much cooler does it need to me?

We'll just have to live with it.

Looks like a cap where the burner should go?

    Is it still in service?

May have been used for DHW and now replaced with the unit next ot it.

Is the circulatory pump connected to it?

Yes, its a boiler and it's still in service. Circulating pump is part of it. From Triad:

"Well, at first I thought 12441 is the NB# but that would put it made in 2000
and that is too new a boiler for the model# you specified. So I believe
12441 is the serial number and that would put this boiler too old for me to
even track. If I had to guess I would say 1940s but that's just a guess
based on when my list of numbers stops
    Hope this helps some."

10 year old 40 gal WATER HEATER is on the left in the photo.

Whole house fan sucked the flame out of a 210,000 btu burner in less than 5 seconds resulting in continuing unburned gas flow at the boiller but did not affect the water heater.

The house is 55 years old.
