Default Going Overboard With Great Stuff

I find some of my most interesting finds above acoustic ceilings. I ran across this beauty on an inspection today.

When I popped a ceiling tile in the basement I saw a trough someone had constructed out of cardboard boxes, nailed to the underside of the floor framing and filled with expansive foam. I popped a few more tiles and followed the trough to its starting point where the drain from the master bathroom sinks entered the trough.

What would possess someone to superinsulate a common drainpipe like this?

By the way, I did observe a stain on a ceiling tile below the trough but I saw no evidence of an active leak. Could someone have gone to this much effort to try to hide a plumbing leak?

I think you hit on it, Scott. I had not thought of that but it makes sense. That part of the basement has sofas, TV, stereo, etc. Thanks.
