    Default Water heater date

Is this an 07 or a lot older? Plus check out that vent. Any thoughts, I have never seen one of these.

If it's the origional heater it's older, with the PB plumbing.

With that 1991 ANSI date, I'd expect it to be about a 1993-94.

    The ANSI number is 1991.

What year was the home built?

That standard, ANSI Z21.10.1a has been updated many times since 1991.

I found 1998, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2009 ... so if that water heater had been manufactured in 2007 the standard shown would be 2006, not 1991.

    Check this chart;

    http://home.comcast.net/~marylandhom...aterDating.pdf

I know the brand name does not match up on the chart but the closest decoding method that would match the chart would be that of the Bradford White.

If you follow that lead the WH would be November of 1992.

I think you've got it correct with 1992 according to the ANSI date. In the future you can use ASNI dates to get a good guesstimate of the age. The dates change every 3 years or so.

The vent was common on these old power vented water heater. They came with the water heater from the manufacturer. This one however, appears as though it may have been patched. Get rid of it if it was.

I think the PB tubing would be my main concern.

In that serial number sequence, the J is for the year of mfr....in this case, it denotes 1992, and the L is the month...this being November. I've got a nice little chart that has mfr. codes for WH and HVAC that I found on the web and have found it to be very accurate.

Sure Jerry...its a website and the URL is How to determine the age of Water Heaters. In case it doesn't show up on the post...there are underscores between the words water, heater, and age. There is a menu on the left hand side that can also take you to the HVAC list too. Hope this helps decipher those pesky serial numbers.

You're welcome. I've used Preston's Guide and I've got a CD from Carrier that's supposed to have all makes and models, but it was last updatred in 2003 so there's nothing new. However, most newwer units have the age stamped on the spec tag. I hope everyone can use this.

Thanks Eric. I use Prestons Guide also, and this looks to be much more complete , and mine is from 03 or 05 as well.

    Hi, all &

Sooo - 'Bottom Line' = Just replace it as it is barely a 'teenager' any more (* 7-10 years is considered 'average', up here in our area, anyway) & "VOILA" !
