    Default Thermostat Location

    During an inspection we found a thermostat installed where the evaporator units were located for a central (5 ton) a/c unit. The client complained that the air does not turn off once temp is reached. Could this be because of thermostat location or thermostat malfunction?

    This does not make much sense? Are you saying that the thermostat is located on the evaporator unit?

    If the desired temp is reached at the thermostat it should turn off regardless of its location.

    If we are talking about digital electronic stats there are differential settings that can be programmed to even the most simple non progammable stat. .5 to 2 degrees is common in most, if there is only a fan still running then a low voltage problem may be there on the g

    I'm sorry that I may not fully understand where the thermostat is located without a picture. Do you mean that the stat is installed on the face of the evaporator coil? Is the air handler in the conditioned space? If it isn't, then there is the problem. The stat only measures the temp. of the environment it is in. So if it isn't measuring the temp. of the conditioned space then it will continue to run until the space the stat is in is at setpoint. Now there are remote sensors available for higher grade stats that allow a stat to be installed anywhere, and the sensor placed in the conditioned space. The stat reads the temp. of the sensor, and can then properly control room temp.
