    Actually it was where the ole grandma locked up her cigarettes from the grandkids.

    I think it's safe to say the hearth extension wasn't worth a crap.

    Well, it is SAFER than the Fp being used for its intended purpose. Note how the brick is lapped over partially blocking the louvers. Also, note the soot stains on the side refractory indicating this Fp drew like a 2 yr old with crayons.

    All their money going up the chimney? Life savings went up in smoke? I've heard of lighting cigars with $50 dollar bills but this is rididulous! We always warn people open fireplaces just waste money up the chimney...

    Poor Dale will have to wait until he gets back from Hawaii...

    Keep the fire in the fireplace.

    Aloha,

    Grandma and the fireplace both have a smoking problem.

    Well this puts a nail in Jerry Pecks belief that “there is no safe fireplace”. What do you say about this Jerry?
