    Default Hand rail

Each one of the risers was 36x36. Does this staircase still require a hand rail. There were 5 risers and this is the primary entrance to the home.

No, because each would be considered a landing.

However, the statement that I put in my report when handrails are not required is: "While not required, I am of the opinion that even one step should have a handrail as many people need the assistance offered by a handrail."

Verbally, I tell them that nearly everyone has an elderly parent, grandparent, uncle or aunt that needs assistance.

How on earth does anyone climb up a stair with 36" high risers?

Oh ... you mean "treads" ... got it.

A "landing" is simply a tread which is a minimum of 36" by 36", smaller and it is not a "landing" but simply a "tread".

Each of those "landings" are therefore "treads" and the entire stair could ... could ... be addressed as such - but the size of the "treads" fits the size for "landings" and thus each one-riser stair becomes its own "flight of stairs" (or would be be "flight of stair" ).

Oh stop the madness. The snow will soften the landing.
